AND THE WINNER IS... Carnival Cruise Lines was named Southern Living Magazine's "Best Cruise Line" in its 2008 Readers Choice Awards. It also took "Best Domestic Cruise Line" honors in the Travel Weekly Readers Choice awards and "Best Cruise Value" in the superior four star category according to readers of Ocean and Cruise News... Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Constellation was voted "Top Large-Ship Cruise Ship in the World" by readers of Conde Nast Traveler... Crystal Cruises' Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were voted "Best Medium-Sized Cruise Ships in the World" in the same derby... Silversea Cruises has been proclaimed the Number One Overall Luxury Cruise Line by high-net-worth consumers in the 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index survey of New York-based Luxury Institute.
AMSTERDAM will receive a record number of cruise ships and passengers this season. 119 arrivals will take place, a 52 percent increase over 2007. The number of passengers will increase from 145,000 last year to 210,000 in 2008. Among the home-porting carriers this year are Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Costa, Holland America, and MSC. A 408-room hotel, connected to the terminal, opened a year ago... Cruise Lines International Association, a trade group, projects that 10.5 million North Americans will board cruise ships this year. That compares with 10.3 million in 2007... The growing interest in South America as a cruise destination has resulted in 91 scheduled cruise ship visits to Buenos Aires for the 2008-09 season. The port has completed $158 million in new piers, deepening of channels, and other facilities to prepare for the surge... A consortium of 15 ports on Europe's west coast has formed the "Atlantic Alliance," whose goal is to gain more cruise traffic. The ports include Hamburg, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Cherbourg, Bordeau, Vigo, and Lisbon.

AND THE WINNER IS... Peter Deilmann Cruises won Travel + Leisure magazine's "World's Best" award in the small-ship category. It also picked up the 2007 Porthole Cruise Magazine title for "Best River Cruises"... Holland America Line received the 2007 Seatrade Environmental Initiative Award for its innovative emission reduction technology installed on the Zaandam... Crystal Cruises was voted "Best Large-Ship Cruise Line" by readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine... Cunard Line is the #1-ranked among the top ten largest cruise lines in the world, says the 2008 Berlitz Guide to Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships. It also received top honors for "Best Overall Food" and "Best Overall Service." In the Porthole Cruise Magazine poll, it won for "Best World Cruise Itineraries" and "Best Onboard Educational Programs." Finally, in the Travel Weekly annual Readers Choice Awards, Cunard's flagship Queen Mary 2 was heralded as the world's "Best Luxury Cruise Ship"... Holland America Line walked away with a slew of citations in Porthole Cruise Magazine's 2007 Readers Choice Awards. Among them: Best Alaska Itineraries, Best Canada/New England Itineraries, Best Central America Itineraries, Best Overall Facilities for Physically Challenged passengers, Best Medical Facilities, Best Art Auction Program, Best Accommodations, Best Private Island. And it won the Best Overall Cruise Value award for the 16th consecutive year from the World Ocean and Cruise Liner Society... Princess Cruises was acclaimed as "Best Cruise Line" by the physician readers of Diversion magazine. Its web site was deemed the "World's Leading Cruise Website" by World Travel Awards... Regent Seven Seas Cruises was named "#1 Small Ship Cruise Line" in Conde Nast Travelers 2007 Readers Choice Awards poll... Carnival Cruises scored big in Porthole Cruise Magazine's Readers Choice Awards, taking honors for Best Megaship, Best Children's Programs, Best Value for the Money, Best Short-Duration Cruise, Best Shore Excursions, Best Onboard Activities, Best Main Dining Room Cuisine, and Best Entertainment.

AND THE WINNER IS... Crystal Cruises, for the 12th consecutive year, has won Travel + Leisure magazine's readers' poll as the "World's Best Large-Ship Cruise Line." Then, the readers of Britain's Conde Nast Traveler magazine voted Crystal Cruises their "Favorite Large Ship Cruise Line"...Disney Cruise Line has been awarded a citation for best overall spa facility and best onboard entertainment by TravelAge West magazine.
MORE THAN 12 MILLION people took a cruise last year, according to trade organization Cruise Lines International Association. That's an increase of seven percent over 2005, it says. U. S. residents accounted for 78 percent of the industry's total... The top five U. S. cruise ports by embarkations in 2006 were Miami, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, Galveston, and Los Angeles... By year-end 2006, there were 11 cruise ships afloat with a capacity of 249,691 lower berths... As a mark of its increasing popularity, the fall foliage New England-Canada route from Baltimore, New York, Boston and even Southampton, England, was conducted by 10 cruise lines this autumn, according to the trade group Cruise Lines International Association.

AND THE WINNER IS... Crystal Cruises' Crystal Spa has been named "Number One Cruise Line Spa" in the Conde Nast Traveler 2007 readers poll... ADD NORFOLK to the roster of port cities with new cruise terminals. The city this season opens a $36 million, 80,000 square foot "Cruise and Celebration Center." During the season, it will handle sailings from Carnival and Royal Caribbean. During off-season, it will serve as a convention and special events center... STOCKHOLM is also set to open a huge 975,000 square foot (about 20 acres) cruise terminal. More than 300,000 passengers are expected this year aboard several hundred liners. The terminal will have a café, shops, modern Swedish design, and large departures, customs, and luggage handling facilities.
