EUROPE'S GROWING CRUISE INDUSTRY was credited with being a key driver in the continent's eonomic recovery. The European Union transport commissioner noted that more than 90 percent of cruise ships are built in Europe and that the European cruise industry is seeing larger than world-average growth in service and passengers. The numbers: Cruise travel generated E35.2 billion in goods and services; 5.5 million Europeans cruised last year; bookings were up 9.3 percent last year over 2009; 30 percent of the world cruise market is in Europe; 23 new ships are due to be built in Europe in the next three years.

AND THE WINNER IS... Princess' Alaska video, "Go North," has won the Telly Award in the documentary, travel & tourism, and cinematography categories. They include scenic footage, interviews with local legends and experts, and tales of early travelers to the great land. The film begins with the Alaska gold rush of 1898 and slowly transitions to the present day... Regent Seven Seas Cruises has been named "Best Luxury Cruise Experience" by Virtuoso Performance Awards for 2011. Virtuoso is a luxury travel network...Regent was also named "World's Best Cruise Line" by readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine and its Seven Seas Voyager suites were named the "Best at Sea" in the Cruise Critic Cruisers' Choice Awards...Seabourn was named "World's Best Small-Ship Cruise Line" in the Travel + Leisure magazine 2011 Readers' Survey.

Cruise Lines International Association, a trade group, reports that 15 million people took a cruise vacation last year. 11.1 million were from North America. It projects an increase of 6.6 percent this year, up to 16 million. Since 1980, the average annual growth has been 7.5 percent. 22 new ships are on order for delivery this year and next. Their 5600 beds will increase fleet capacity by 17.4 percent.

AND THE WINNER IS... Norwegian Cruise Line has won the Travel + Leisure Magazine Design Award in the "Best in Transportation" category for its studio staterooms for solo travelers and its Studio Lounge for those travelers. The facilities are on two decks and consist of 100-square-foot cabins with full-size bed and separate areas for the bathroom, sink, and shower. The lounge has refreshments and meeting areas. There is no single supplement pricing... Holland America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam has been named "2011 Ship of the Year" by the World Ocean and Cruise Liner Society... "Best Mediterranean Itineraries" and "Best Africa/Middle East Itineraries" awards were won by Costa in this year's Porthole Cruise Magazine Readers' Choice Awards competition... Disney Cruise Line was named the Number One cruise experience in the Mega-Ship category in the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine annual Readers' Choice Awards. Disney was also named Top Family-Friendly Large-Ship Cruise Line in the 2010 Word's Best Awards poll sponsored by Travel + Leisure magazine... Holland America Line's Mariner magazine for previous passengers has won top honors in four categories in the 2010 Pearl Awards competition for custom publishing. It took the top prize for its design, improvement, photography, and editorial content... The 450-passenger Seabourn Odyssey was the world's highest rated cruise ship in Conde Nast Travelers magazine's Gold List for 2011. The Seabourn fleet also won in the categories of service, food, and accommodations.

AND THE WINNER IS... Norwegian Cruise Line garnered ten "Best in the Industry" awards in the 2010 Travel Weekly Magellan Awards competition. Among them: Best Contemporary Cruise Ship, Norwegian Epic; it also won awards in the suite design, restaurant design, spa design, and pool design categories, and for its solo traveler accommodations... Readers of Conde Nast Traveler Magazine have named Crystal Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises the "Best Large Ship Cruise Line" for 2010, in a first-ever tie. The award marks the 17th year that Crystal has received the honor... Its classic storytelling, entertainment, and passenger service have gained Disney Cruise Line the Conde Nast Travel Readers Choice Award for "No. 1 Cruise Travel Experience." for 2010. In addition, readers of Travel + Leisure named Disney Cruise Line the "Top Family-Friendly Large-Ship Cruise Line."..."Best Value for the Money," "Best Entertainment," "Best Mexican Riviera Itineraries," "Best Casinos," "Best Web Site," and "Best Theme Cruises" titles were awarded to Carnival Cruise Lines in the 2010 Porthole Magazine Readers Choice Awards... Cunard Line, for the eighth consecutive year, has won the "Best World Cruise Itineraries" award from Porthole Magazine. It also was accorded the "Best Transatlantic Itineraries" and "Best On Board Educational Programs" accolade by Porthole. Cunard started transatlantic trips in 1840 and World Voyages in 1920.
